What does God expect of us?
August 25, 2009That was the question Richard Stearns, President of World Vision U.S. asked an arena full of Women of Faith attendees this past weekend in Dallas. Richard was a great speaker and has an amazing story of how he left his luxurious corporate CEO life to take on child poverty one face at a time. He wasn’t a hero (at first), he shared how he basically felt guilted into accepting the position. I mean, would you leave being the comfy CEO of Lennox China for a 75% pay cut and travel to the poorest countries in the world? He shares his story in his new book, The Hole in our Gospel. I’m looking forward to reading it soon!
So, like most of us, I’ve seen and ignored the commercials. You know; sponsor a child for only $35 dollars a month, etc. I always hid behind the old adage of “who knows if these organizations are legit,” or ” the kids probably don’t see any of the money,” etc. Well, that may or may not be true of those other organizations but I really believe World Vision is the real deal. We heard so many encouraging stories about the blessings the children, families and sponsor families experience from this connection, it was truly touching.
Needless to say, I’M A MOMMY….sort of! Meet my sponsored child Suzan who lives in Uganda. I’ve contacted WV to see if her sister and brother are available for sponsor as well, fingers crossed! If not, I’ll probably adopt a boy as well. There seemed to be a lot of girl packets being picked up so I felt bad picking Suzan and not a boy, but you can’t just pick up that picture and then put it back down.
So, as your kids start back to school, I’d encourage you to consider sponsoring a child through World Vision so that they may experience an education as well, not to mention food, medical attention and much more. It’s a great learning experience for your children as well to see how other children around the globe are so different, yet so alike!
I can’t wait to start getting more information on her as well as updates on how she’s doing! I’ll be sure and keep everyone posted!
